no-mans-land

Between opposing trenches

No-man's-land is territory that belongs to no one or that no one controls—originally the contested ground between opposing trenches in World War I, swept by fire from both sides.

The term now applies to any dangerous or disputed zone: The border crossing was a no-man's-land of checkpoints and barbed wire.

Figuratively, it describes ambiguous situations that fall between established categories: The proposal exists in a no-man's-land between policy and law.
