bushwhacking

Cutting through wilderness

Bushwhacking is making your way through dense vegetation where no trail exists, pushing through brush and undergrowth: We spent hours bushwhacking through the forest.

The term also means ambushing someone from a concealed position, especially in guerrilla warfare—attacking from the bush.

A bushwhacker is someone who does either: a backcountry traveler or an ambusher.
