venatio

Roman beast spectacle

Venatio refers to the spectacles of wild animal hunts staged in ancient Roman arenas, where trained hunters called venatores fought exotic beasts—lions, bears, elephants, and others—for public entertainment.

The term comes from the Latin word for hunting.

These events often preceded gladiatorial combat and could involve elaborate staging with artificial forests and terrain: The morning venatio featured twenty lions released into the arena.
