lead dogs
Musher's front team
Lead dogs are the dogs positioned at the front of a sled dog team, responsible for setting pace and following the musher's directional commands.
They require intelligence, initiative, and the ability to find trails in poor visibility.
The term extends metaphorically to people who guide or set direction for a group: She's one of the lead dogs in the department.
