mulattos

Half one, half another

Mulattos is the plural of mulatto, an offensive and dated term for a person of mixed white and Black ancestry.

The word reflects historical racial classification systems, particularly in colonial Americas where elaborate taxonomies ranked people by supposed "blood quantum." A Virginia planter in 1780 might have used the term matter-of-factly; today it is considered degrading and reductive.

The preferred terms are biracial or multiracial, or simply whatever identity a person claims for themselves.
