mud puppy
Aquatic feathery-gilled salamander
A mud puppy is a large North American salamander that retains its feathery external gills throughout life, living permanently in water.
The name comes from a folk belief that these amphibians bark like dogs.
They inhabit muddy lake bottoms and slow streams: We found a mud puppy under a rock in the creek.
Also spelled mudpuppy.
