polliwog

Young pond swimmer

A polliwog is a tadpole—the aquatic larval stage of a frog or toad, before it develops legs and loses its tail.

The word is informal and somewhat old-fashioned, more common in American English: We caught polliwogs in the pond and watched them grow into frogs.

Also spelled pollywog.
