muckraker
Investigative corruption reporter
A muckraker is a journalist or writer who investigates and exposes corruption, scandal, or wrongdoing—especially by powerful institutions or public figures.
The term emerged in early twentieth-century America for reporters who uncovered corporate abuses and political graft: The muckrakers revealed unsafe conditions in meatpacking plants.
Though originally dismissive, the label became a badge of honor for investigative journalists.
