telegram boy
Young cable deliverer
A telegram boy was a young man employed to deliver telegrams—urgent messages transmitted by telegraph and then carried the final distance by hand.
Before telephones became widespread, seeing a telegram boy at the door often meant important news, sometimes dreaded: During the war, families feared the telegram boy bringing word of a death.
The role disappeared as telecommunications evolved.
