coded

Requiring a key

Coded means converted into a system of symbols or signals: coded messages, coded data.

More commonly now, coded describes language that conveys meaning indirectly or to a particular audience while maintaining plausible deniability: coded racism, coded appeals to voters.

A coded message might be encrypted, or it might simply mean one thing on the surface and another underneath.
