monopoles
Hypothetical isolated magnetic charges
Monopoles are hypothetical particles possessing only a single magnetic pole—either north or south—unlike ordinary magnets, which always have both.
In standard physics, cutting a magnet in half produces two smaller magnets, each with two poles; a monopole would be fundamentally different, carrying isolated magnetic charge.
Though predicted by some theories and searched for in particle physics experiments, magnetic monopoles have never been observed.
The term also appears in antenna design, where a monopole antenna is a single conductive element, typically a quarter-wavelength rod mounted on a ground plane.
