Lost during combat
Missing in action describes military personnel who cannot be accounted for after combat—neither confirmed dead nor known to be captured.
The status persists until the person is found, remains are identified, or they're declared dead.
Abbreviated MIA.
Informally, missing in action describes anyone whose whereabouts are unknown: Has anyone seen Jake? He's been MIA all week.
