mini-boss

Stronger than grunts

A mini-boss is a video game enemy stronger than regular opponents but less powerful than a full boss—an intermediate challenge, often guarding a key item or area.

The term extends beyond gaming to describe any significant but not ultimate obstacle: Getting past HR is the mini-boss; the CEO interview is the real boss fight.
