mineral spirits

Petroleum-based thinner

Mineral spirits is a petroleum-derived solvent used for thinning oil-based paints, cleaning brushes, and degreasing metal surfaces.

It evaporates cleanly without residue.

Also called white spirit or paint thinner, though technically distinct from some products sold under that name: Clean the brushes with mineral spirits before the paint dries.
