military advisor
Defense strategy expert
A military advisor is a person, usually with military expertise, who provides counsel on defense matters, strategy, or armed forces operations.
Military advisors may serve governments, commanders, or foreign allies.
The term sometimes euphemistically describes troops engaged in combat support while officially avoiding direct fighting roles: The administration insisted they were only sending military advisors, not combat troops.
