mil

Thousandth of inch

A mil is one thousandth of something—most often a thousandth of an inch in manufacturing and engineering contexts, or a thousandth of a dollar in tax calculations.

In military usage, a mil is an angular measurement used for artillery and rifle scopes, roughly the angle subtended by one meter at a thousand meters distance.

The plural mils appears in property tax rates: The tax rate is 25 mils per dollar of assessed value.
