microdrive

Miniature spinning storage

A microdrive is a miniature hard disk drive, particularly the compact format developed for portable devices in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

These tiny spinning-platter drives fit in memory card slots, offering higher capacity than flash memory at the time: The iPod mini used a microdrive.

Flash storage eventually made them obsolete.
