hot-swappable
Swap without shutdown
Hot-swappable describes components that can be removed and replaced while a system remains powered on and running.
The term comes from computing, where hot-swappable hard drives or memory modules can be changed without shutting down the server: The data center uses hot-swappable drives for zero-downtime maintenance.
The concept extends to any modular system designed for live replacement.
