men-at-arms
Armed feudal troops
Men-at-arms were medieval soldiers, typically armored cavalry who served a lord or king.
The term distinguished professional fighting men from conscripted peasants or auxiliary troops.
A man-at-arms might be a knight or simply a well-equipped soldier of lower rank: The castle garrison included twenty men-at-arms.
The plural is standard; the singular man-at-arms is rare.
