warhorses
Cavalry's seasoned mounts
A warhorse is literally a horse trained for battle—large, strong, and conditioned to tolerate combat.
The word now more commonly describes a person with long experience in a demanding field, especially politics or the military: a party warhorse who's survived six administrations.
In theater and music, a warhorse is a work performed so often it's become a reliable standard: Beethoven's Fifth is an orchestral warhorse.
