megalomania

Delusions of grandeur

Megalomania is an obsession with one's own power, importance, or ability—delusions of grandeur taken to pathological extremes.

The term originated in psychiatry but now applies loosely to anyone whose ambitions or self-regard seem wildly inflated: The CEO's megalomania led him to believe the company couldn't survive without him.

A megalomaniac possesses or exhibits megalomania.
