savior complex
Compulsive helper syndrome
A savior complex is the belief that one is uniquely capable of rescuing or helping others, often accompanied by an inflated sense of one's own importance to their wellbeing.
The term is usually critical, suggesting the "savior" prioritizes feeling needed over actually helping: His savior complex made him insufferable—he couldn't let anyone solve their own problems.
Related to white savior complex, which specifically describes outsiders who believe they can rescue marginalized communities.
