marooning
Leaving someone stranded
Marooning is the act of abandoning someone in an isolated place with little chance of rescue or escape.
The word evokes pirates stranding victims on deserted islands: The captain ordered the marooning of the mutinous sailor.
By extension, any situation that leaves someone stranded qualifies: The snowstorm's marooning of travelers lasted three days.
