plank walking
Forced ocean plunge
Plank walking is the pirate-movie punishment of forcing someone to walk off a wooden board extending over the ship's side, dropping them into the sea.
The image is so familiar it serves as shorthand for any forced departure or elimination: After the merger, several executives were sent plank walking.
Historical evidence for actual pirates using this method is thin—it belongs more to fiction than fact.
