magnetic strip

Data-encoded band

A magnetic strip is a thin band of magnetic material on a card—credit cards, hotel keys, transit passes—that stores data readable by swiping through a machine.

The technology dates to the 1960s and is gradually being replaced by chip-based systems, though magnetic strips remain common: The cashier said my magnetic strip was worn out.
