magneto

Permanent magnet generator

A magneto is a small electrical generator that uses permanent magnets to produce current, typically for ignition in internal combustion engines.

Before modern electronic ignition, magnetos were standard in automobiles, aircraft, and motorcycles: The plane's magneto failed on takeoff.

They remain common in lawnmowers, chainsaws, and vintage vehicles because they work without a battery. (Capitalized Magneto is a comic book character.)
