red supergiant

Massive dying star

A red supergiant is an enormous aging star that has exhausted its core hydrogen and expanded to hundreds of times the sun's diameter while cooling to a reddish hue.

Betelgeuse in Orion is the most famous example.

Red supergiants represent a late stage of stellar evolution, typically ending in supernova explosions.
