coarse sand

Large beach particles

Coarse sand is sand with relatively large grains, typically ranging from 0.5 to 2 millimeters in diameter.

It feels gritty between the fingers and drains water quickly, making it useful in construction, landscaping, and soil amendment: Add coarse sand to improve drainage in clay soil.

Finer grades are called medium sand and fine sand.
