going under

Failing beyond recovery

Going under means sinking below a surface, especially water: The boat was going under fast.

More commonly it describes business failure—a company going under has become insolvent and ceased operations: Three restaurants on that block went under last year.

It can also mean losing consciousness, particularly from anesthesia: Count backward from ten; you'll be going under soon.
