procaine

Injection before drilling

Procaine is a local anesthetic, the first widely used synthetic substitute for cocaine in medical procedures.

Marketed as Novocain, it numbs tissue by blocking nerve signals.

Though largely replaced by newer anesthetics like lidocaine, procaine remains familiar from dentistry: The dentist gave me a shot of Novocain before drilling.
