sterile field
Surgically clean area
A sterile field is a controlled area kept free of microorganisms during medical procedures.
Surgeons, nurses, and other personnel maintain the sterile field by using sterilized instruments, drapes, and gloves, and by following strict protocols about what may enter the space: Don't reach across the sterile field.
Breaking sterile technique risks infection.
