novocaine

Dentist's injection fluid

Novocaine is a local anesthetic used to numb tissue during dental and minor surgical procedures.

The term has become generic for any dental anesthetic, though the original brand (procaine) has largely been replaced by newer drugs like lidocaine: The dentist gave me novocaine before drilling.

Figuratively, something that numbs emotionally or intellectually: Television as novocaine for the masses. (Capitalized Novocaine is the trademark.)
