loblolly

Coarse-grained conifer

Loblolly is a pine tree native to the southeastern United States, fast-growing and valued for timber and paper pulp.

The word originally meant a thick gruel or muddy puddle, and the tree likely got its name from the boggy lowlands where it thrives.

A loblolly bay is a different tree, an evergreen magnolia of swampy coastal regions.
