loan word

Adopted foreign term

A loan word is a word adopted from one language into another with little or no modification.

English has borrowed extensively: *kindergarten* from German, *sushi* from Japanese, *café* from French.

Also spelled as one word: loanword.

The technical term is *borrowing*, though nothing is returned.
