liberty tree
Rebellion's gathering oak
A liberty tree was a large tree, often an elm, designated as a gathering place for American colonists protesting British rule before and during the Revolutionary War.
The original Liberty Tree stood in Boston, where the Sons of Liberty met beneath it.
The term later became a symbol of popular resistance and democratic ideals: They planted a liberty tree in the town square.
