left fielders
Baseball's outer guardians
Left fielders are baseball players who defend left field—the outfield area to the left of center when viewed from home plate.
The position requires strong throwing arms and good range.
Figuratively, someone out in left field is eccentric or wildly off-base, and this association occasionally colors the term: The whole department is staffed with left fielders.
