cutoff man
Throw interceptor, infield
In baseball, the cutoff man is an infielder who positions himself between an outfielder and home plate to relay a throw.
By intercepting long throws, the cutoff man can redirect the ball more quickly and accurately, or hold the ball if the play at home is hopeless: The shortstop was the cutoff man on the play.
