law of nature

Fundamental physical principle

A law of nature is a fundamental principle describing how the physical world operates—gravity, thermodynamics, conservation of energy.

These aren't legislative laws but observed regularities that appear universal and inviolable.

The phrase also appears in philosophy and theology to describe moral principles supposedly inherent in creation: Natural rights derive from the law of nature.
