cultural practice

Learned group behavior

A cultural practice is a customary behavior, ritual, or tradition shared by members of a social group—religious observances, dietary customs, child-rearing methods, artistic traditions.

The term often appears in discussions of heritage preservation or when explaining why groups do things differently: Female genital cutting is a cultural practice in some African communities.

The phrase can neutrally describe or defensively justify: It's a cultural practice sometimes implies outsiders shouldn't judge.
