kraut

Tangy hot-dog topping

Kraut is an offensive slang term for a German person, used especially during World Wars I and II.

The word comes from sauerkraut, the fermented cabbage dish associated with German cuisine.

It remains derogatory today, though less charged than during wartime: The old veteran still called them krauts.

Lowercase kraut can simply mean sauerkraut itself.
