knob and tube
Pre-war electrical system
Knob and tube is an early method of electrical wiring used in buildings from the 1880s through the 1940s.
Wires ran through ceramic knobs mounted to framing and passed through joists via ceramic tubes.
The system lacks grounding and can be a fire hazard, so modern building codes typically require its replacement: The inspector found knob and tube in the attic.
