arc lamp

Bright gap light

An arc lamp produces light by passing electric current through a gap between two electrodes, creating a bright arc of ionized gas.

Before incandescent bulbs became practical, arc lamps lit streets and large spaces.

They remain in use where intense light is needed: searchlights, film projectors, and industrial applications.
