kinescopes

Filmed television broadcasts

Kinescopes are recordings of television broadcasts made by filming the screen of a cathode ray tube.

Before videotape became standard in the late 1950s, this was the only way to preserve live TV programs: Many early episodes survive only as kinescopes.

The term also refers to the picture tube itself in early television sets.
