kick-down

Accelerator-triggered gear drop

Kick-down is an automatic transmission feature that downshifts to a lower gear when you floor the accelerator, providing sudden power for passing or merging: I hit the kick-down to get around the truck.

The term also appears in British slang for a share or contribution, especially of drugs or money.
