karats

Measures gold's purity

Karats measure the purity of gold, with 24 karats being pure gold.

Lower numbers indicate gold mixed with other metals: 18-karat gold is 75% pure, 14-karat is about 58%.

The term applies only to gold—diamond weight uses the homophone carat.
