jihad

Sacred inner battle

Jihad is an Arabic term meaning struggle or striving, particularly in service of God.

In Islamic tradition, the greater jihad is the internal spiritual struggle against sin and toward moral improvement.

The lesser jihad refers to armed struggle in defense of the faith—the sense that dominates Western usage, where jihad typically means holy war waged by Islamic militants: The group declared jihad against the West.

The adjective is jihadi or jihadist.
