jihadists

Religious militant fighters

Jihadists are people who engage in jihad—originally an Arabic term for spiritual struggle or striving in God's cause.

In contemporary usage, jihadist almost always refers to Islamic militants who wage armed campaigns, often terrorist in nature, in pursuit of religious or political goals: The jihadists claimed responsibility for the bombing.

The term carries strong associations with groups like al-Qaeda and ISIS.
