irrational numbers

Pi's numerical family

Irrational numbers are numbers that cannot be expressed as a ratio of two integers.

Their decimal expansions go on forever without repeating: pi, the square root of 2, Euler's number.

The ancient Greeks discovered them and found them disturbing—hence "irrational," suggesting something unreasonable or contrary to logic.

Together with rational numbers, they form the real numbers.
