cadenza
Virtuoso's unaccompanied moment
A cadenza is an elaborate solo passage near the end of a concerto movement, where the orchestra falls silent and the soloist displays virtuosity.
Originally improvised, cadenzas are now usually written out.
The term extends to any showy solo flourish: The pianist launched into an extended cadenza before the final chord.
