inlaid

Sunk into surface

Inlaid describes a surface decorated by setting pieces of contrasting material—wood, metal, stone, or shell—into shallow recesses so they lie flush: an inlaid mahogany box, a tabletop inlaid with mother-of-pearl.

The technique creates patterns or images within the surface rather than on top of it.

Inlaid is the past tense and adjective form of inlay.
